A few weeks ago, The Modern Honolulu announced that Masaharu Morimoto would be closing Morimoto after six years at The Modern. The restaurant will officially close its doors on December 8. I’ve frequented the restaurant regularly during their six-year run, often running into the “Iron Chef” himself. Of course, I had to visit once more before they closed.
The one dish that I was sure to get one final taste of was the Ishi Yaki Buri Bop. The sushi quality yellowtail is cooked tableside in a hot stone bowl and then mixed in with the other ingredients, including rice and a raw egg.
Of course, we had a few other items…including the kakuni, featuring pork belly (slow cooked for ten hours), rice congee, and braised pork jus. Two days later, I went back for this same dish.

Morimoto fans, don’t be too sad, though. The Iron Chef may be on hiatus for a few months, but he won’t be gone for too long. He plans to open Morimoto Asia (fusion cuisine) and Momosan (a ramen joint) at the newly renovated Alohilani Resort (set to open in the fall of 2017, formerly the Pacific Beach Hotel).
