I’ve been on a bit of a health kick over the last couple of months (more on that in a future post, and yes, you may commence the rolling of the eyes). That said, I’m never one to turn down a good burger. And Square Barrels, well, they’ve got some pretty darn good burgers.
To start? Beignets! Beignets in Honolulu! Not quite New Orleans and not quite Café du Monde. But it will do. By the way, beignets from Café du Monde is one of those things that you just have to experience in life. You just gotta…
I went with Square Barrel’s take on the classic Patty Melt. A Double Patty Melt, because, YOLO. For an additional buck you can top off you burger with the premium cheese selection of the day, which I did. You can also choose to have either truffle or marrow butter drizzled over the burger, which I wanted…but they were out of truffle butter. Next time, I guess. As a side, you can choose between regular french fries or french fries fried in pig fat. Again, french fries fried in pig fat is an option. Guess which one I chose. Of course I went with the pig fat soaked french fries, arteries be damned.
Michelle went classic, with the Drive-Thru Burger. It didn’t disappoint. I know because I took a bite. The house-ground 80/20 local grass-fed beef was tender and juicy. I reluctantly handed the burger back to its rightful owner.
If you have a hankering for a well made burger then Square Barrels is a must try. The vibe is fresh, think modern hipster gastropub…whatever that means. They’re located in Downtown Honolulu, Bishop Square, on the corner of Hotel and Alakea. Your arteries will thank me later.
