Holoholo Weekly: Haleakala Night Timelapse, Trail Closures, The Rock Gets No Pancakes

Holoholo Weekly is a compilation of stories and tidbits that we’ve collected from around the web. It’s like a weekly mystery grab bag of Hawaii related goodness, featuring different articles of interest, fun images, videos, products, deals, downloads, and more.

My pick of the week is this timelapse video of the night sky over Haleakala National Park by Chris Archer. The video was shared on Facebook by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

We caused quite the stir this week when we posted a piece of satire aimed at recent cease & desist letters to local hiking bloggers, trail closures, and overall negative publicity surrounding hiking in Hawaii. Of course, Hawaii did not close all state hiking trails. That said, were you Rickrolled?

“That’s the irresponsible list of the travel magazines and the travel videos and of course the youtube,” said Delorese Gregoire, who runs the Winners’ Camp near the top of the ridge..

[“and of course the youtube” made me giggle. THE YOUTUBE!]

Of course, some hikers had a few choice words, including Crystal Evans of HikingHawaii808.com.

“I believe we should be able to take a picture of what we want and be able to post it on our websites and that is our freedom and right,” said Evans.

This is a repeat of last year, when Kamehameha Schools told local bloggers to stop mentioning trails on private land.

“I guess they’re basically just trying to scare a couple bloggers into taking down their posts and I guess starting a discussion in the hiking community, which they have, I believe, successfully started,” said local hiker Kenji Saito.

The Rock just couldn’t get his fill of Ken’s Pancakes. Poor guy.
