Keep Cool on Maui With Ululani’s Shave Ice

Where to get shave ice on Maui? The consensus answer seems to be Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice. As with Hawaii’s other famous shave ice joints (see Matsumoto’s and Waiola’s), Ululani’s serves up their finely shaven (that’s the secret to a good shave ice) concoction with a nice pouring of homemade flavored syrups. And they go to eleven with their flavors. Think tiger’s blood, li hing mui, calamansi and leche. Too adventurous for your shave ice palate? They also serve the standards: strawberry, pineapple, coconut, and almost any other flavor that you can think of.

After some scrambling to find this location (they have two storefronts in Lahaina), we were greeted with a long-ish line for shave ice, despite the cold weather (mid 60’s on Maui in March…what?!).

This kid was ahead of us in line. Got change for a twenty?

Yes, shave ice in hand! Now, how do I eat this thing? As a local would say, bumbai you learn, boy.

Now, it was our turn. What to choose? We decided to go the classic route: Hawaiian Rainbow. What’s in a Hawaiian Rainbow you ask? Strawberry, pineapple, and vanilla. In Hawaii, vanilla syrup is blue.

Some of the hardworking shave ice connoisseurs at Ululani’s. Patience and a steady hand is required for perfectly shaved Hawaiian ice. The finely shaved ice is what sets a Hawaiian shave ice apart from snow cones on the mainland. Hawaii no doubt does it better.

Drizzle that syrupy goodness on there. Not satisfied with your liquid sugar levels…they let you go back for as much syrup as you like!

And there it is, our Hawaiian Rainbow shave ice from Ululani’s in Lahaina. As an added bonus, they sprinkle li hing mui powder on the top of every shave ice for free. Of course, we had to compliment our have ice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (no, it’s not blue) and condensed milk drizzled over the top.

I was so ready to devour this shave ice. She decided to snap a photo and then the syrup decided to drip all over my shorts! It was a mad rush to eat that shave ice.

We checked out the larger 819 Front St. location. They also have a smaller location that is closer to the ocean. The two locations are just a hop and a skip from each other. Try them both? Why not.
