Holoholo Weekly: Molokai, Magnum PI, and Hawaii’s Best Hidden Beaches

Holoholo Weekly is a compilation of stories and tidbits that we’ve collected from around the web. It’s like a weekly mystery grab bag of Hawaii related goodness, featuring different articles of interest, fun images, videos, products, deals, downloads, and more.

My pick of the week is this story from the Huffington Post on artist Moses Hamilton, who has Paraplegia and uses his mouth to paint Hawaii inspired landscapes.

Speaking of paint, the paint set of former Kalaupapa resident, Ed Kato, was recently discovered. He was known to have painted various things around the settlement with positive words.

“Ed Kato’s paint set turned out to be a time capsule in the Kalaupapa museum collection. When the case was opened earlier today, Kato’s paints were still inside. Kato was famous for his hand-painted signs and rocks around Kalaupapa.” –Kalaupapa National Historical Park

Speaking of Molokai, neat feature on the Friendly Isle, from the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s school newspaper, Kaleo.

What are the top five issues in Hawaii? A CQ Roll Call survey asked reporters in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., to identify them. KITV reporter Andrew Pereira was interviewed for the survey, click here to see what he said.

HAWAII Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards 2015 says that these are the 20 Best Hawaii Luxury Hotels and Resorts. Here’s the Top 5:

  1. St. Regis Princeville Resort
  2. Grand Wailea
  3. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Kaupulehu
  4. Halekulani
  5. The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua

Thoughts on the above: Spa Grande at Grand Wailea is by far the best spa experience in Hawaii. Michelle and I got married at the Halekulani, had our reception there, and stayed in their wedding suite. Amazing staff, spectacular service. The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua features some of the largest room suites that I’ve had the pleasure of staying in…and there’s nothing to complain about when it comes to the Kapalua coast.

Is the sale of the Magnum P.I. home tied to President Obama? Maybe. Or, maybe not?

Urban Foraging: On The Hunt in Honolulu.

“A movement to make better use of food resources already growing in our cities is taking root in the islands. It’s called urban foraging. The goal is to bring more wild foods back into our diet. HPR’s Molly Solomon has this report from the streets of Honolulu.”
