Urban Hiking the Perimeter of Oahu

Khym Ansagay, urban hiker extraordinaire, recently completed walking around the perimeter of Oahu in its entirety using roads, bridges, and bike lanes. His walkabout was split into 10 trips, all beginning and ending at a bus stop, and totaled 54 hours and over 148 miles. The following maps, images, and descriptions are provided by Khym to document his impressive feat. The trips are ordered geographically rather than order of completion.

Pearlridge to Kapolei

A couple years ago I walked down Pearlridge before but this time I check out where exactly the bicycle route would take me… It’s been bugging me awhile now how the heck am I gonna get Waipahu to Kapolei without using the highway since I didn’t see any sidewalk down there… instead of looking for sidewalk… I realize I should be Googling for where the bicycle routes are… things suddenly look a lot more possible….

The walk was hot, with the rotten smell of stinky water or maybe sewage… surprising a lot of bugs flying and sticking to my sweaty skin almost got lost trying to figure out where the other bicycle routes are…overall it was an interesting 14 mile walk …my adrenaline feels like it still pumping but that would do for now….

I figure I should just do a warm up for my antisocial week which is also my vacation to do anything that comes to my mind instantly. Decided to finish up this small section in the windward side in my quest to walk around the island.

Kailua to Windward Mall

I was just curious about the levee to be honest but just got in the mood to keep on walking and walking…. The yucky smell of the water reminds me of my little adventures back home… you would think its a long walk but it isn’t… its the view that makes it look very far.

  1. I was a native of the islands for 32 years. I found your website to be intriguing. Since am familiar with the island I tried to connect your journey from one point to the other and found it difficult because your descriptions demonstrated back tracking and reversals. An Index Map and captions to your photos would have been helpful for me. Regardless, I found it interesting.

    • Hi Zeus, yes the pics aren’t always in order and sometimes the track alone might not be enough info to pinpoint the location. Khym has 50 – 100 pictures from most of those trips and I tried to pick a few I found interesting to keep the post from getting too bloated and it’s generally meant to be a snapshot of the travels.

If you have questions about any specific location I can check up on it.

  2. Thank you for posting this. I am planning on doing such a walk while visiting Honolulu this winter. I’m wondering if there is a good map you could recommend that would give me an idea of the overall walk?
