A Casual Lunch at Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar

It was a lazy Saturday. A sleep in till 11AM kind of Saturday. A good meal was in order. For lunch, we decided to check out Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar on a whim. This authentic Italian eatery in Waikiki sits just next to The Royal Hawaiian, Hawaii’s famous pink hotel.

Lunch started with a basket of warm bread, with a plate of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

As an appetizer, we ordered a serving of Calamari Fritte, served with spicy pomodoro sauce. The calamari was slightly disappointing. It was a bit too fried, which erased most of the calamari taste to the calamari fritte.

Following the calamari, our order of Tagliatelle Bolognese came. Ah, things began to get better. The ragù alla bolognese features finely minced beef, pork, and veal in a rich tomato sauce. The tagliatelle pasta tasted very fresh and complimented the bolognese very well.

The best part of lunch came on a silver platter, a silver pizza platter that is. The Prosciutto Pizze was pure delight and indulgence. The first thing that my senses picked up was the scent of the white truffle oil. The second was the saltiness of the aged prosciutto. This dish was indeed delicious and one that I would order again. In fact, I was still thinking about the prosciutto perfection the following day.

Il Lupino was a bit of a mixed bag. I had expected more, despite the lukewarm Yelp reviews. The calamari was indeed disappointing, but the bolognese and prosciutto more than made up for it. I’d dine here again, just for that pie of prosciutto perfection.
